Equivalent Exposure Calculator
Equivalent Exposures:
An Equivalent Exposure Calculator is a tool that helps photographers find different combinations of Shutter Speed, Aperture (f-stop), and ISO that result in the same overall exposure.
What is Equivalent Exposure?
Equivalent exposure means that you can change one setting (shutter speed, aperture, or ISO) and compensate with another to maintain the same brightness in an image. This gives photographers flexibility depending on their creative and technical needs.
How It Works
The Exposure Triangle consists of:
- Shutter Speed – How long light hits the sensor.
- Aperture (f-stop) – The size of the lens opening.
- ISO – The sensor’s sensitivity to light.
Since all three settings contribute to exposure, changing one requires adjusting another to keep the same exposure value (EV).
Example of Equivalent Exposures
Let’s say your correct exposure is:
- Shutter Speed: 1/250 sec
- Aperture: f/8
- ISO: 200
Possible equivalent exposures could be:
- 1/125 sec, f/11, ISO 200 → (Slower shutter, smaller aperture)
- 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 200 → (Faster shutter, wider aperture)
- 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100 → (Lower ISO, wider aperture)
All these settings allow the same amount of light into the camera, keeping the exposure consistent.
